"Although the National OA organization has stopped using lodge numbers to identify lodges... the tenure of service to the Order from our council is unique. In order to acknowledge the 93 years of Order of the Arrow history in New York City... it was decided to retain the use of the lodge number 4.
The new lodge is holding its first event 4/13/13, during which the winning design of their lodge flap design contest will be unveiled."
"Old timers may recall the hostility engendered in the past when the National rule of one council-one lodge was even mentioned concerning the NYC lodges. Well, times change. Not too long ago we had 28 districts each with an OA chapter. Now we have only 8.
"Three of those chapters are in Queens. At a typical chapter meeting of Mantinecock we get 10-15 youth, slightly less at Wadowannock and much less at Catawba. We used to generate 50 brothers at our old LT meetings and now 30 is the average attendance for the whole borough of Queens. I believe Shu Shu Gah is similar and even less for the other three lodges.
Gene Berman in a 8/31/12 posting to Patch-L announced that "The Lodges will continue to operate independently for now and will recharter independently in December.""USVIC Board Member David Zumwalt, 'Our overarching mission is to encourage the growth of Scouting in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Partnering with NCAC gives us access to the training and program resources of a big council while creating a bridge of friendship between the USVI and Washington, DC. USVIC initiated the process at the recommendation of BSA's national office. The affiliation was prompted by challenges arising from a prolonged economic downturn which included the closing of the HOVENSA refinery in St. Croix, the USVI's largest private sector employer. As one of the largest Boy Scout councils in North America, NCAC emerged as the best option and following careful consideration and review by legal counsel, the affiliation was approved by both organizations.'"

"The Virigin Islands Council had struggled for years. Arawak lodge existed only on paper and was non-functioning. While Puerto Rico Council may have seemed like a better fit based upon geography, it has been said NCAC was better positioned to support Scouting in this US territory.
"Amangamek Wipit lodge has already issued two flaps paying tribute to the former Arawak lodge."
As I have been unable to find any information regarding Arawak Lodge and its corresponding merger, and based on John's blog posting, I am going to assume that the lodge simply merged along with the council on March 1st.
They were also savvy enough to grab Mascouten Lodge's lodge number, the lowest available. Effective: 1/1/14 Reference: 10/5/13 posting to Patch-L by Chuck Jaxel, Lenape Lodge #8 website
The new council has two Scout Resource Centers in Westampton and Millville; however, National's council locator confirms Westampton, NJ. They also inherited Burlington County Council's PO Box in Rancocas, but this doesn't appear to be used on their website or any of their forms. Garden State Council's website lists all of the communities in Burlington County except for Bass River Township. Buena and Buena Vista in Atlantic County from Jersey Shore Council were also moved to Garden State Council. |
