Effective Jan. 1, 1973, the New Section Operation consolidated the Twelve Regions into Six. The new regions were divided into areas and subdivided into sections. It was at the new sectional level that lodges participated in annual conclaves.

Area 3-C, Baltimore Area and Del-Mar-Va councils from Area 3-A; Mason-Dixon Council from Area 3-E; Potomac Council from Area 3-F; Region 6; most of Kentucky (not including Dan Beard, Scioto Area, and Tri-State Area councils) and Four Rivers Council from Region 4; and Region 5 (not including Arkansas and Louisiana) were combined to form the new Southeast Region.

• All eight lodges from Area 3-C were transferred to Section SE-1. Nentico 12 and Nentego 20 from 3-A, Guneukitschik 317 from 3-E, and Ahtuhquog 540 from 3-F were also included, for a total of twelve lodges:

Both the online history of Section SR-7, dating from 1994, as well as the printed history of SE-8 from 1984 claimed that SE-1 was the nation's largest section-- at least up until that time:

"According to History to SE-8, published in 1984, the National and Regional OA planners originally wanted to split Area III-C lodges among at least two other sections, but after much pleading and discussion it was agreed to leave the Virginia lodges together, adding 3 Lodges from Maryland (Nentico 12, Guneukitschik 317, and Ahtuhquog 540) and one from Delaware (Nentego 20) to form SE-1, the largest section in the nation.
