Region 3 originally consisted of two areas: Area E, which covered eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia was renamed Area 3-A; and Area F, which covered western Pennsylvania, became Area 3-B:

I need to show councils with disbanded lodges that either rechartered with a new name OR merged into a council with existing lodge. I also need to correct boundary for SW Warren Co. when re-drawing maps for Region 3.
m = merged into
nc = name changed
dis = disbanded
rc = re-chartered
The old Area E, and Area F-- which covered Pennsylania, Maryland, Virginia, and DC-- were combined to form Region 3 as part of the 1948 integration into the twelve scouting regions.

Mercer County Council, located in northwestern Pennsylvania, also included the small community of Brookfield Township right across the border in Ohio. All region and council maps that I have seen prior to the 1973 Six Regions depict the Ohio-Penna. border as a region boundary. The most significant map of this era was in 1965, and did not include Ohio. However, research and maps of Region 3 published by Neal Bronder include that small part of Ohio.
Dave Scocca has created a very slick animated map from Youtube that shows the boundary changes for Region III.
- Between 1953 and 1954 Area 3-A experienced several realignments. First, Nentico 12 and the Virginia lodges split off to became Area 3-C by 1953:

At the 1953 3-B Area Conference at Twin Echo, there were 620 attendees from 16 lodges. Up to that time, this was the largest Area Fellowship Meeting ever to be held-- larger than all but four National Meetings.
The 1953 Area 3-B conclave booklet also included "Indiana Lodge," a new lodge attending its first area meeting that August. It became Hopocan 275 after being officially chartered 3/9/54.

- At the 1953 3-B Area Conference at Twin Echo, there were 620 attendees from 16 lodges. Up to that time, it was the largest Area Fellowship Meeting ever to be held-- larger than all but four National Meetings. According to the 1967 Area 3-B Meeting booklet, it was at the 1953 Conference that it was decided to divide the Area into two new areas: the 8 lodges in the Pittsburgh area, and the 8 remaining lodges. A coin toss at the 1953 meeting determined that the first group of lodges would be become the new Area 3-F, and the second group would remain as Area 3-B (Price 3).

Trivia: these areas somewhat resembled the telephone area codes of the time: 814 for 3-B, and 412 for 3-F.
- Chief Cornplanter Lodge #255 changed its name to its namesame in Iroquoian, Gyantwachia-- possibly to differentiate from their council's name, Chief Cornplanter.
Effective: 1/1/54
- **In Kiciyapi, The History of Langundowi Lodge 46, 1929 - Present, Todd Rogers explains:
"Sometime after the Area III-B Conference in 1959, the lodge chief changed their name to Skanondo Inyan 256. 'Skanondo Inyan' comes from the Seneca language, and means 'Deer Rock'. The lodge maintained the same totem, a backwards facing deer superimposed on a rock.... Even while they were chartered as Deer Rock, the lodge frequently used 'Skanondo Inyan' on their papers and insignia, so the name change was not particularly surprising."
This is also documented in the 1959 III-B Fellowship booklet, which lists Deer Rock Lodge 256, while the 1960 III-B booklet and event patch verify that Skanondo Inyan Lodge was the host lodge.
- Wopsononock 347 and Amadahi 441 merged with Hopocan 275 in Area 3-F to form Nachamawat Lodge #275 in 3-B.
Effective: Sep., 1970
References: The 1973 3-B booklet states 1970, and the 1974 NE-5C booklet states that Nachamawat-- who was also the host that year "became active in the fall of 1971". The 1991, 1992, & 1993 NE-5 Conclave booklets all state that Nachamawat was "chartered and organized in September 1970." Arapaho II 2000 & 1993 eds. and the Blue Book all give 1971. What this may mean, is that the predecessor lodges' charters maybe have lasted until the end of 1970, and that an official charter for the new lodge would've been Jan 1st.
However, Allohak Menewi Lodge 57 History, 5th Anniv ed states: "After the merger of Blair Bedford, William Penn and Admiral Peary Councils in 1971, it became a necessity to merge the three chapters of the Order of the Arrow, Wopsononock, Amadahi and Hopocan into one. The first organization meeting of the new Lodge was held at Wopsononock Scout Reservation, the former Blair-Bedford Scout Camp on May 16, 1971. The Lodge name and totem were chosen, officers elected and activities planned." Not sure what this may mean. Either this date is actually when Nachamawat started to function as a new lodge, or it may just indicate when their first event was actually held. My preference would be to go by the earlier sources for the start date.
- William Penn (Hopocan 275), Admiral Robert E. Peary (Amadahi 441), and Blair-Bedford (Wopsononock 347) merged to form Penn's Woods Council #508 in Windber, PA.
Effective: 1970
- Historical note: "On December 29, 1949, a meeting convened at Alpine Scout Camp in northern New Jersey to plan the 1950 NOAC at Indiana University. In attendance were members of the national committee, as well as nine of the newly elected area conference chiefs, one from as far away as Texas. These young men met to discuss what they thought should happen at the next NOAC, and they elected Dick Wilson of [Chimalus 242] in Area 3-B, Washington, Pennsylvania, as the first National OA Conference chief."

- Washington Trail (Eriez 46) merged with Custaloga (Ho-Squa-Sa-Ga-Dah 251) and Colonel Drake (Skanondo Inyan 256) to form French Creek Council #532 in Erie, PA.
Effective: 1972
- ***Packanke 419 merged with Unalachtigo 168 to form Kuskitannee Lodge #168.
Effective: 5/12/1973
HOWEVER, according to the 1973 Area III-B Meeting booklet, Packanke 419 was in attendance that August, and only after the event would the lodge "cease to exist, and they will become part of a new lodge[, Kuskitannee 168.]"
Kuskitannee, of course, was chartered to the "Moraine Trails Council... the result of a merger between the [Lawrence County] Council at New Castle and [Pioneer Trails Council at] Butler in early 1973."
Neal Bronder, who attended as part of Packanke Lodge, confirmed this. "The officers at the 3-B Meeting were from Kuskitannee, but I believe we were registered as Packanke. I think they wanted to be part of the final 3-B Meeting."

*Amangamek-Wipit 470 was originally chartered in March, 1952 without a name or totem. In June 1953, the first lodge name "Amanquemack" was obtained in a telephone conversation with a Delaware Indian language expert at the Smithsonian Institution. The lodge name was interpreted as "large fish"; there was no word for shark in the language. In late 1955, additional research was done on the lodge name. It was discovered that the word "Amanquemack" had been written down incorrectly in the original telephone conversation with the Smithsonian. The correct spelling was "Amangamek". The word for tooth, "Wipit", was added to complete the lodge name which first appeared in early 1956.
